BERLIN CONFERENCE
AGENDA
Establishing a framework for equitable territorial division and colonial governance in Africa
About Committee
“Everything Everywhere All at Once”, a modern-day masterpiece, perfectly represents the vast and interconnected nature of existence. It highlights how the smallest of decisions made by individuals have a profound impact on the lives of many. The Berlin Conference, a committee set in 1884, puts you in a similar situation to that of the characters in the movie as nations must grapple with the complex tapestry of decisions that reverberated across continents. A seemingly insignificant conference lost to the sea of time, the Berlin Conference determined the fate of African nations, setting in motion a cascade of events that would shape the course of history.
The Berlin Conference was a stepping stone to the widespread colonial Scramble for Africa. It is the defining moment which paved the way for complete European domination in Africa for the years to come. The time of the New Imperialism was met with economic booms for Europe and the slow drainage of African wealth and resources. In this committee, we attempt to simulate this crucial phase in imperial history, as Europe ventures into unknown waters or more appropriately land. With the involvement of African kingdoms, the conference puts forward a plethora of alternatives for the delegates.
You must intricately navigate the delicate balance between choice and consequence, as decisions are akin to ripples in a pond which can cascade into powerful waves. How you proceed is up to you, so what will it be, cooperation or domination?
Chairpersons' Address
Greetings delegates,
Existence is like a labyrinth and in this reality, we often find ourselves at a crossroads, with each path unlocking different destinies for us. It is in this maze of life that the true mettle of an individual is tested. Rest assured, the Berlin Conference is designed to pose similar conundrums and to test your ability to navigate complex and multi-faceted challenges thrown at you.
The Berlin Conference will test your ability to deliver technical speeches and write innovative communiques as well as your understanding of colonial dynamics in 19th century Africa. Each nation entered this pivotal period in history with certain objectives, and it is through your actions in this committee that the aspirations of these nations can be realised whether that be the modernisation and industrialisation of Africa or the colonial aspirations of Europe. You will be expected to swiftly deal with crises as a committee, set up a clear framework for the future of imperialism in the region as well as navigate and address numerous border disputes.
Let’s take a look at your chairpersons (clearly, this was not written by us) -
Shreyas Ray is just as interested in becoming a doctor as he is in chairing this committee – interpret that as you will. While other members of the human race conscientiously work to succeed in the rat race, Mr. Ray tends to show up with minimal preparation (not to forget, sleep) and steal the show. Although his trophy cabinet is not even close to being as starved as his favourite club Arsenal’s, many
of his MUN awards have been won on a little bit of research and a lot of ‘charm’. Whether he wins a Best or an Outstanding (the lowest his standards can accept), he is sure to sweep the competition when it comes to Most Annoying Delegate. The indisputable fact remains that his knowledge of ‘foreign affairs’ is first-rate. It is difficult to impress Mr. Ray but if you have done it, consider yourself worthy (or just well versed with David Fincher’s catalogue).
Prakarsh Jhajharia is a dedicated science student who prioritises his studies above anything else. His academic journey is one of fierce competition, especially in his quest to secure the highest marks possible. His repertoire of extracurriculars is equally impressive having established himself as a prominent speaker and MUNner. If you manage to defeat him in an MUN committee, do not worry as you are sure to meet defeat at his hands in Minecraft Bedwars. Prakarsh represents the textbook "geek" as you cannot separate him from his digital atmosphere which could also be viewed as his life support. When not immersed in his books or writing lines of useless code, he switches on the TV just for Ferrari to pull off another disastrous strategic error. If you want a communiqué passed by him, make sure to use enough of your Suits references.
This conference represents an ocean of opportunity and we hope we can collectively seize the opportunity to craft a memorable experience for everyone in the Berlin Conference.
Until May,
Prakarsh Jhajharia and Shreyas Ray,
Chairpersons,
The Berlin Conference, 1884,
La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2024.
