INTERNATIONAL PRESS CORPS
AGENDA
Discussing journalistic sources in the context of national security, with special emphasis on whistleblower incidents
About Committee
Truth, as defined by Merriam Webster, is “the property (as of a statement) of being in accord with fact or reality”, a body of facts. Moreover, it is also the essence of the International Press Corps, and this year, the committee will be deliberating upon the cost and consequences of delivering the truth.
Journalism has various factions, and so does our committee. Our debate will be centered around the treatment of journalistic source in its relation to national security and state affairs, especially focusing on whistleblowers, a controversial but significant subject in the field.
There are intricacies in the impact Press has, on governmental action; and while sometimes, that is imperative, authorities claim that it derails national plans. Bringing together news-houses from the world, we intend to merge unique perspectives and conclude with practical solutions, towards resolving controversies and protection of journalistic integrity. In the past five years, journalism has been under rising attack, with reporters being suppressed, imprisoned and targeted violently. Often termed as the Fourth Pillar of Democracy, we will explore the functionality of the media in actual democracies, studying past whistleblowing occurrences and composing an action-plan.
Additionally, the delegates will have an alternative role – as reporters. They will be allotted to other committees, study its agenda and question its delegates, whilst producing articles containing the highlights of those committees. We welcome all aspiring literary enthusiasts, journalists (evidently!) and creative persons.
Evidently, the International Press Corps will not have a single dull moment! At every juncture during the Conference, the members of IPC will have much to do, always someplace to go, and amidst heated debate and fervent reporting on explosive world events, the Press vows to be informed, and keep informed.
Chairpersons' Address
Greetings, Delegates!
Welcome to the International Press Corps, of LMCMUN 2024!
We are your Chairpersons, Rhianna and Raunak.
I am Rhianna. Three things about me: I talk excessively, indulge in incessant writing, and dedicate most of my time to obsessing over Press. Consequently, I look for the same characteristics, verbatim, from Delegates! To me, IPC means thinking independently, finding a cause to advocate for, in today’s hostile society; where individuality and authenticity is shamed. We have inevitable differences, and it is, ultimately, acceptable to take notes from where Edgar Allan Poe writes, “I could not bring / My passions from a common spring— / From the same source I have not taken / My sorrow”. Do not lose yourself in the crowd! Finally, what is a Chair’s address, if it does not make you go, Oh damn, oh damn, Oh. Damn!...And that is THREE Oh damns. Oh, we also tend to imagine ourselves as Brooklyn 99 characters.
Hi, this is Raunak, the science enthusiast who sways between molecules and movie reels, living in a delightful delusion where he is a good actor and an active debater. If you happen to witness a nerdy physics fanatic donning round Harry Potter glasses during the day and a dance floor dynamo by night, rest assured, it is none other than your Chairperson – Raunak. If cinematic air could replace oxygen, I would undoubtedly be inhaling it 24/7.
Collectively, we would like to express how honoured we are, to be chairing the International Press Corps. We are excited to receive innovative paperwork, preside over constructive (read: tense) dialogue and watch our Delegates interrogate other committees and gain realistic experiences of journalism in the real world. We hope you have a memorable time!
Until May,
Rhianna Majumder and Raunak Chatterjee,
Chairpersons,
International Press Corps,
La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2024.
